Reading Great Expectations I found that there were little connects between the book and I. Although I had few connections there, the connections I found were pretty strong. In that my parents have goals for me to accomplish in life and when Mr. Jaggers finds Pip and tells him that an unknown person has given him money to make him into a gentleman I can see a connection. As Mr. Jaggers says “….and the communications I have got to make is that he has great expectations.”(page138) I see myself in that expectations are in line that we both must fulfill in our lifetimes. We both have people who have thought that we have much potential in our life and with a little practice we can accomplish anything we want. Although Pip and I have grown up in a completely different style, different time periods and different wealth standards we both try to find ourselves while growing up. Pip being raised by his sister and in poverty by the English standards and myself being raised by my biological parents and in a time of a recession, have had the experiences to figure out different things such as different ways of looking at things and different views on life.
As Pip is growing into a gentleman he ends up forgetting who is and who is real friends and family are. Since, Pip has dropped the ones he loves he doesn’t really get a sense of who is friends are and I can relate to that. Last year I had a group of friends who I really liked, but when I got to high school I decided to drop them because I didn’t like how they did certain things and some of the things they said/ have done are not something that I would want to be associated with when someone looks at me, they have done things that have ended up hurting me without them knowing. I have become what one says “a floater”. In the same sense Pip as too become a floater. When Drummle Pip’s “friend” asks Estella’s hand in marriage it ends up hurting Pip. You could tell Pip was upset when he found out that Estella will be marrying Drummle in this quote “don’t let Miss. Havisham lead you into this fatal step. Put me aside for ever-you have done so, I well know-but bestow yourself on some worthier person than Drummle….”(page 363). Pip also shows his affection for Estella; “you know I love you. You know that I have loved you long and dearly”(page 362). Pip and I share little in common, but what we do share is meaningful to our lives.
